An absolute value measures an expression's distance from a midpoint on a number line. 2=|g+3| ⇒ |g+3|= 2This equation means that the distance is 2, either in the positive direction or the negative direction. |g+3|= 2 ⇒ lg+3= 2 g+3= -2 To find the solutions to the absolute value equation, we need to solve both of these cases for g.

lc g+3 ≥ 0:g+3 = 2 & (I) g+3 < 0:g+3 = - 2 & (II)

lcg+3=2 & (I) g+3=-2 & (II)

(I), (II): LHS-3=RHS-3

lg_1=-1 g_2=-5

Both -1 and -5 are solutions to the absolute value equation.
