Exercise 1 Page 210

How many cases do you have after you remove the absolute value?

Solutions: x=-5 or x=5
Graph:

Practice makes perfect
An absolute value measures an expression's distance from a midpoint on a number line. |x|= 5

This equation means that the distance is 5, either in the positive direction or the negative direction. |x|= 5 ⇒ lx= 5 x= - 5 In this case, our absolute value expression is only the variable x, so our equivalent pair of linear equations does not need any more simplifying. Now, let's graph these solutions on a number line.
