Exercise 16 Page 603

Practice makes perfect
a We are asked to find the ratio of the height of the door to Alice's height in Wonderland. To do this, we will substitute the given lengths and simplify.

Height of the door/Alice's height=15/10=3/2 The ratio of the height of the door to Alice's height in Wonderland is 32.

b In this part, we are asked to find the height of the door in Alice's normal world. To do this, we will create a proportion using the ratio we found in Part A.
Height of the door/Alice's height=3/2 Since we know that Alice is about 50 inches tall, we will substitute this value into the above proportion and evaluate. Let h be the height of the door in Alice's normal world.
h/50=3/2
h*2=50*3
2h=150
h=75
The height of the door in Alice's normal world is 75 inches.
