Exercise 41 Page 21

Practice makes perfect
a Let's substitute x=16 in the equation and calculate y.
y=3+sqrt(x-8)
y=3+sqrt(16-8)
y=3+sqrt(8)
y=3+2
y=5
The value of the equation is 5 when x=16.
b Similar to Part A, we substitute x=16 into the equation.
y=sqrt(x)-7
y=sqrt(16)-7
y=4-7
y=- 3
The value of the equation is - 3 when x=16.
c Similarly to Parts A and B, we substitute x=16 into the equation.
y=4+|9-x|
y=4+|9- 16|
y=4+|- 7|
y=4+7
y=11
The value of the equation is 11 when x=16.
