Exercise 57 Page 422

What is the most likely angle between the surface and the horizontal line?

Acute

Practice makes perfect

When we hang a picture, we most often prefer that the frame is horizontal. If we use a level on the top of the frame, it would be parallel to a horizontal line. Let's see what this would look like.

Solution 25368 1.svg

Let's now hang this picture slightly askew and see what angle we get between the level and the horizontal line. The level remain aligned with the frame.

Solution 25368 2.svg

The situation we see in the illustration is realistic. The angle between the level and the horizontal line is acute. Let's now reproduce a situation where the angle between the level and the horizontal line is no longer is acute. Let's see what it looks like if the angle is right.

Solution 25368 3.svg

This is a highly unrealistic situation. We can therefore conclude that the most realistic type of angle is acute.
