Exercise 24 Page 71

Inequalities can be solved in a way similar to how we solve equations, by performing inverse operations until the variable is isolated.

Solution: n>- 16

Practice makes perfect
Let's begin by solving the inequality.
4>n/- 4
4>- n/4
- 4
- 16
n>- 16
To solve this inequality using a calculator, we begin by pressing Y=. Then, we write the inequality in the first row. Notice that we will use x as our variable, as this is the only variable we are allowed to write using the calculator.
Solution17454 1.svg

To draw the inequality we press GRAPH.

Solution17454 4.svg

We cannot see where the graph starts, as the windows settings do not allow it. We have to extend it in the negative direction of the x-axis. We can do that by pressing WINDOW and then making the necessary changes. Let's change Xmin from - 10 to - 20.

Solution17454 5.svg

By pressing GRAPH again, we draw the inequality using the new window settings.

Solution17454 6.svg

We can see from the graph that the solution set lies to the right of -16. Therefore, our answer is correct.
