Exercise 12 Page 70

How long would it take if the bus was driving as fast as possible the entire time?

Inequality: t≥3
Time: At least 3 hours

Practice makes perfect
To calculate the time it will take the bus to drive 165 miles we will use a variation of the distance formula, d=r* t. t=d/rWe know that the bus needs to travel a distance d of 165 miles and that the maximum speed r the bus can go is 55 miles per hour.
t=d/r
t=165/55
t=3
However, r=55 is the maximum speed the bus can go — it may need to drive slower for portions of the trip. If the bus needs to slow down, the time it will take to reach its destination will be extended. We can account for this by writing an inequality. t≥3 This shows that the drive will take at least 3 hours, but can take more than 3 hours.
