Exercise 10 Page 537

Assign a variable to the missing value.

48.0

Practice makes perfect
Let's assign the variable x to the missing value. tan x^(∘)=1.11 The tangent of the angle is 1.11. Now, to isolate x we will use the inverse function of tan.

tan x^(∘)=1.11 ⇔ x^(∘)=tan ^(- 1)1.11 Let's use a calculator to find the value of tan ^(- 1)1.11. First, we will set our calculator into degree mode. To do so, push MODE, select Degree instead of Radian in the third row, and push ENTER. Next, we push 2ND followed by TAN, introduce the value 1.11, and press ENTER.

The value of x^(∘) is about 48.0^(∘), so the missing value is about 48.0.
