Exercise 54 Page 55

Find the coordinates and substitute them into the Distance Formula.

Approximately 8.9 miles

Practice makes perfect

We want to find the distance between Elm Station and Symphony Station.

We can do this using the Distance Formula. d=sqrt((x_2-x_1)^2+(y_2-y_1)^2) The coordinates for Elm Station are (-3,-6) and the coordinates for Symphony Station are (1,2). Let's substitute these points into the formula.
d=sqrt((x_2-x_1)^2+(y_2-y_1)^2)
d=sqrt(( -3- 1)^2+( -6- 2)^2)
d=sqrt((-4)^2+(-8)^2)
d=sqrt(16+64)
d=sqrt(80)
d≈8.9
Keeping in mind that each unit represents a mile, we can say that it is approximately 8.9 miles from Elm Station to Symphony Station.
