Exercise 66 Page 712

Instead of subtracting a negative number, you can add.

- 4.9

Practice makes perfect
Let's perform the subtraction.
- 10.25-(- 5.35)
- 10.25 + 5.35
5.35 + (- 10.25)
5.35 - 10.25
- 4.9

We can see that subtracting a negative number is the same as adding its positive counterpart. Below we will demonstrate by finding - 10.25 and moving 5.35 units to the right on the number line.

The resulting position, after moving to the left on the number line, is the difference. - 10.25-(- 5.35)=- 4.9
