a Let's draw a triangle. We are given the measures of two interior angles of this triangle and are asked to find the measures of ∠ 2, the third interior angle, and ∠ 1, the corresponding exterior angle of ∠ 2.
Let's find these two measures, one at a time!

Finding m∠ 1

The Exterior Angle Theorem tells us that the measure of the exterior angle of a triangle is the sum of the measures of the two remote interior angles. We can use this to find the measure of ∠ 1.
m∠ 1=70+71
m∠ 1=141
The measure of ∠ 1 is 141^(∘).

Finding m∠ 2

The Triangle Angle-Sum Theorem tells us that the measures of the interior angles of a triangle add to 180^(∘). We can use this to find the measure of ∠ 2.
70+71+m∠ 2=180
Solve for m∠ 2
141+m∠ 2=180
m∠ 2=39
The measure of ∠ 2 is 39^(∘).
b When the support is shortened, the hood is closing down. The measure of ∠ 1 therefore increases.
c When the hood support is shortened, the hood is closing down. The measure of ∠ 2 decreases accordingly.
