Exercise 13 Page 288

What do you need to do to obtain 5(x+7)=- 3 from 5x+35=- 3?

Distributive Property

Practice makes perfect
To identify the Property of Real Numbers being demonstrated by the given equation, we should first identify the operation being performed. If5(x+7)=- 3, then5x+35=- 3. In this case, the product of a number and a parenthetical factor is equal to the sum of the products of the number and each term inside the parentheses. This is the Distributive Property.
5(x+7)=- 3
5 * x + 5 * 7=- 3
5x+35=- 3
