Exercise 6 Page 875

Use the formula for the surface area of a cone.

Lateral Area: About 620.1 square feet
Surface Area: About 874.5 square feet

The Turkish beehive room can be modeled by the following cone with a height of h= 20 feet and a radius of r= 9 feet.
We are asked to find the surface area and the lateral area of the cone. First, by the Pythagorean Theorem we will find the slant height of the cone l.
h^2+ r^2=l^2
20^2+ 9^2=l^2
Solve for l
400+81=l^2
481=l^2
l^2=481
sqrt(l^2)=sqrt(481)
l=sqrt(481)
l=21.931712...
l≈ 21.93
Now, we will find the surface and the lateral area of the cone.
Lateral Area Surface Area
Formula L=π r l S=π r l + π r^2
Calculations L=π ( 9)( 21.93)=197.37π S=π ( 9)( 21.93)+π ( 9)^2=278.37π
L≈ 620.1 S≈ 874.5

Therefore, the surface area of the Turkish beehive room is about 874.5 square feet, and the lateral area is about 620.1 square feet.
