Exercise 1 Page 687

Choose an appropriate scale and use it to draw an arrow presenting the given vector.

Example Answer:

Practice makes perfect
We are asked to draw the vector w that represents 75 miles per hour 40^(∘) east of south. First, we will choose the scale. Many scales could work, but as an example we will use 1 cm:25 miles per hour. Using this scale, we can evaluate the length of our vector. 75/25=3 In our diagram w will have a length of 3 centimeters. Since we are given that our vector is 40^(∘) east of south, we will draw a segment that satisfies this condition. To do this we will put a protractor in the center point along the north-south line and find the appropriate angle on the east side.

Next we will use a ruler to find the point that lies on the red segment and is 3 centimeters from the center point.

Finally, we will connect the points with a ray. This ray will represent the vector w.

Remember to include a scale on the diagram.
