Exercise 10 Page 63

To divide two decimal numbers, multiply the divisor and the dividend by the same power of 10 so that the divisor is a whole number.

2.5

Practice makes perfect
We want to divide two decimal numbers. The calculations are easier if we multiply the divisor and the dividend by the same power of 10 so that the divisor and the dividend are whole numbers. In this case, we will multiply by 100. 1.25* 100 &= 125 0.5* 100 &= 50This means that 1.25Ă· 0.5 is the same as 125Ă· 50. Let's make a rough estimation for our division. We can round 125 to 100. 100 Ă· 50 = 2 Our quotient should be about 2. Now we will find the exact quotient. We divide, multiply, subtract, and compare as many times as we need.
Since 125 Ă· 50 = 2.5, we know that 1.25Ă· 0.5 = 2.5. We know that the answer is reasonable because 2.5 is close to our estimate.
