Examining the diagram, we see a right triangle with legs of length x and y. Bu using the Pythagorean Theorem we can find an expression for the hypotenuse.
a^2+b^2=c^2
x^2+ y^2=c^2
c^2=x^2+y^2
c=± sqrt(x^2+y^2)
