Exercise 4 Page 363

When multiplying two negative numbers, we obtain a positive product.

- 0.0625

Practice makes perfect
The expression - ( 12)^4, or - ( 12) to the fourth power, can be written as the product of four - ( 12) terms. Note that in this case, there are no parentheses surrounding the negative sign. - a^n ⇔ -1(a^n)This means that we should evaluate as though parentheses surround the exponent and multiply the result by -1.
- (1/2)^4
- [(1/2)* (1/2)* (1/2)*(1/2)]
- (1/16)
- 0.0625
Using a calculator, we can either enter - ( 12)^4 or - ( 12* 12* 12* 12). Both expressions give us the same answer.
