We have been given a sentence and we need to translate it into an equation.

12 less than a number m equals 20.

Every equation has an equals sign and values or expressions on either side of it. Key phrases, such as is, is equal to, and equals tell us about the placement of the equals sign.

12 less than a numberm equals 20. ⇕ 12 less than a numberm = 20. On the left-hand side we have a key phrase: less than. This word tell us the operations that will be used in our equation. Less than indicates subtraction. 12 less than a numberm m - 12 On the right-hand side, we only have a number 20. Putting these sides together, we have a complete equation. m - 12 = 20
