Exercise 49 Page 279

Determine the ratios between consecutive y-values and find the y-intercept.

y=- 0.5(2)^x

Practice makes perfect

We want to write an exponential function represented by the given graph.

To do so, we will start by making a table of the x- and y-values marked on the given graph. Then, we will calculate the increase in the x-values and the ratio between consecutive y-values.

The y-values change by a factor of 2 as x increases by 1. Moreover, note that when x=0, we have that y=- 0.5. This means the y-intercept is - 0.5. We have enough information to write the exponential function. y= - 0.5( 2)^x
