Exercise 46 Page 60

The maximum total weight means that the weight of the vehicle and its contents has to be less than or equal to the given value.

2 Axles: w≤ 40 000

3 Axles: w ≤ 60 000

4 Axles: w ≤ 80 000

Practice makes perfect

Let's analyze each vehicle separately. We will keep in mind that since we cannot have a negative weight, we will only graph positive numbers.

2 Axles

For a vehicle with 2 axles, the maximum total weight including its contents is 40 000 punds. This means that w must be less than or equal to 40 000. w ≤ 40 000 To graph this inequality in a number line we place a closed dot at 40 000, and shade everything to the left.

3 Axles

For a vehicle with 3 axles, the maximum total weight including its contents is 60 000 pounds. This means that w must be less than or equal to 60 000. w ≤ 60 000 To graph this inequality we place a closed dot at 60 000, and shade everything to the left.

4 Axles

For a vehicle with 4 axles, the maximum total weight including its contents is 80 000 pounds. This means that w must be less than or equal to 80 000. w ≤ 80 000 To graph this inequality we place a closed dot at 80 000, and shade everything to the left.
