Rational exponents and radicals represent different but equivalent ways to write an expression that has been raised to the power of a fraction. For example, the square root of something is the same thing as raising to the power of one half, the cube root of something is the same thing as raising to the power of one third, and so on. Generally, the index of a root represents the denominator of the fraction which we are raising to the power of.
This chapter explores radicals and rational exponents and how to manipulate such expressions. It will also describe how to graph radical functions, its limitations, and how we can transform the graph of a radical by performing vertical and horizontal translations, stretches and shrinks. Then, the chapter investigates how we go about solving radical equations including testing for false roots which can appear when we square a radical equation.
