Exercise 14 Page 334

What makes lines parallel or perpendicular?

Parallel, see solution.

Practice makes perfect
Lines are parallel if their slopes are identical, and perpendicular if their slopes are negative reciprocals. Any other relationship between the lines would be neither parallel nor perpendicular. The first step in determining this relationship is to identify their slopes.

y&= 3/4x-1 ⇒ m_1= 3/4 y&= 3/4x+29 ⇒ m_2= 3/4 Since the lines have same slopes, we can conclude that they are parallel.
