5. Writing a Function Rule
Sign In
Substitute some arbitrary values for x to find their corresponding y-values.
The given equation says that the y-values are one less than four times x. By substituting some arbitrary values for x, we can simplify and determine the corresponding values of y, which we can use to form ( x, y) coordinate pairs. We will do this a few times to make a table of values for the given function rule.
x | 4x-1 | y | (x,y) |
---|---|---|---|
-1 | 4( -1) - 1 | -5 | ( -1, -5) |
0 | 4( 0) - 1 | -1 | ( 0, -1) |
1 | 4( 1) - 1 | 3 | ( 1, 3) |
Let's plot these three points on a coordinate plane.
By connecting all of our points with a line, we form the graph of the function rule.
