5. Writing a Function Rule

Exercise 39 Page 267

Substitute some arbitrary values for x to find their corresponding y-values.

Practice makes perfect

The given equation says that the y-values are one and a half more than x. By substituting some arbitrary values for x, we can simplify and determine the corresponding values of y, which we can use to form ( x, y) coordinate pairs. We will do this a few times to make a table of values for the given function rule.

x x+1.5 y (x,y)
-1 -1 + 1.5 0.5 ( -1, 0.5)
0 0 + 1.5 1.5 ( 0, 1.5)
1 1 + 1.5 2.5 ( 1, 2.5)

Let's plot these three points on a coordinate plane.

By connecting all of our points with a line, we form the graph of the function rule.
