In mathematics, the most common type of coordinate system—also known as a coordinate plane—is the Cartesiancoordinate system. A two-dimensional coordinate system has two axes: the x-axis and y-axis. These axes are perpendicular to one another and intersect at the origin.
The axes of a three-dimensional coordinate system has are also perpendicular to each other and intersect at the origin.
Coordinate systems are used to describe the position of points or other objects.
