Exercise 3 Page 91

Gather all the variable terms on one side of the equation and all the constant terms on the other side.

- 7

Practice makes perfect
To solve an equation, we should first gather all the variable terms on one side of the equation and all the constant terms on the other side using the Properties of Equality. In this case, the variable term is already on the left-hand side of the equation, so we will start by multiplying the equation by 4. Then, we will add 1 to both sides.
y-1/4=- 2
( y-1/4 ) 4=(- 2) 4
y-1=(- 2)4
y-1=- 8
y-1+1=- 8+1
y=- 7
The solution to the equation is y=- 7. We can check our solution by substituting it into the original equation.
y-1/4=- 2
- 7-1/4 ? = - 2
â–Ľ
Evaluate left-hand side
- 8/4 ? = - 2
- 8/4 ? = - 2
- 2=- 2 âś“
Since the left-hand side is equal to the right-hand side, our solution is correct.
