To solve an equation, we should first gather all of the variable terms on one side and all of the constant terms on the other side using the Properties of Equality.

8-2y=3y-2

LHS+2y=RHS+2y

8-2y+2y=3y-2+2y

Add terms

8=5y-2

LHS+2=RHS+2

8+2=5y-2+2

Add terms

10=5y

.LHS /5.=.RHS /5.

10/5=5y/5

Calculate quotient

2=y

Rearrange equation

y=2

The solution to the equation is y=2. We can check our solution by substituting it into the original equation.

8-2y=3y-2

y= 2

8- 2( 2)? =3( 2)-2

Multiply

8-4? =6-2

Subtract terms

4=4 ✓

Since the left-hand side is equal to the right-hand side, our solution is correct.
