Exercise 77 Page 51

Remember, only like terms can be combined.

- 5m^3n+5mn

Practice makes perfect
The first step in simplifying this expression is to identify which, if any, terms can be combined. Remember, only like terms — constant terms or terms with the same variable and the same exponent — can be combined. - 9m^3n + 4m^3n + 5mn In this case, we have two m^3n-terms and one mn-term. Only the m^3n-terms can be combined, so to simplify the expression we will rearrange it according to the Commutative Property of Addition and then combine like terms.
- 9m^3n + 4m^3n + 5mn
- 9 * m^3n + 4* m^3n + 5mn
(- 9 +4)m^3n+5mn
- 5m^3n +5mn
