On a map, we can see that Des Moines is between Kansas City and Minneapolis along Interstate 35.

If these three cities are assumed to be in a straight line, then the Segment Addition Postulate says that the distance between Kansas City and Minneapolis is the sum of the distances between Kansas City and Des Moines, and between Des Moines and Minneapolis.
