Exercise 14 Page 61

What do the markings on the sides and at the vertices indicate?

Type of Polygon: Quadrilateral
Convex or Concave: Convex
Regular or Irregular: Irregular

Practice makes perfect
This polygon has four sides, so it is called a quadrilateral. The lines containing the sides do not have points in the interior of the polygon, so it is convex.

To determine whether this polygon is regular or irregular, we need to examine the markings.

  • The hatch marks on two sides indicate that they are congruent. However, since two sides are not marked, this polygon is not equilateral.
  • The arcs at the vertices indicate that not all of the angles are congruent, so this polygon is also not equiangular.

Since it is neither equilateral nor equiangular, it is an irregular quadrilateral.
