What can you do to isolate a variable in an inequality?

Inequalities can be solved in the same way as equations, by performing inverse operations on both sides until the variable is isolated. The only difference is that when you divide or multiply by a negative number, you must reverse the inequality sign.

- 3x+7>43

LHS-7>RHS-7

- 3x>36

Divide by - 3 and flip inequality sign

x< - 12

Now, we can write the solution set. {x|x<- 12} This tells us that all values less than -12 satisfy the inequality. Now, let's graph the solution set on a number line. Notice that since the inequality is strict, x cannot equal -12, which we show with an open circle on the number line.
