Exercise 7 Page 263

Use inverse operations in order to isolate the variable.

See solution.

Practice makes perfect
We want to solve the following equation. 1/5t+2 = 17

When solving an equation, we should use inverse operations in order to isolate the variable. First, let's use the Subtraction Property of Equality and subtract 2 from both sides of the equation. That way, we will isolate 15t on the left-hand side of the equation. 1/5t+2 - 2 &= 17 - 2 &⇓ 1/5t &=15 Next, let's use the Multiplication Property of Equality and multiply both sides of the equation by 5. That way, we will isolate t on the left-hand side of the equation. 5 * 1/5t &=5 * 15 &⇓ t &= 75
