Exercise 2 Page 170

Try to write one expression as the other expression using properties of operations.

Yes

Practice makes perfect
We are asked to determine if the two following expressions are equivalent. 10x-3+2x-5 and 4(3x-2) Let's try to simplify the first expression using properties of operations.
10x-3+2x-5
10x+2x-3-5
(10+2)x-3-5
12x-8
From here we can use the Distributive Property in reverse order to factor out 4.
12x-8
4*3x-4* 2
4(3x-2)
We found that the expressions are equivalent.
Expressions Are They Equivalent?
10x-3+2x-5and4(3x-2) Yes
