Does any dataset contain outliers?
Does any dataset contain outliers?
See solution.
Median and IQR, see solution.
First, we have to enter the values into lists. Push STAT, choose Edit, and then enter the values in the first two columns.
Having entered the values, we have to instruct the calculator that we want to graph a combination histogram and boxplot. Push 2nd and Y=, and choose one of the plots in the list. Make sure you turn the plot ON, choose the type to boxplot, and assign L1 as XList.
Finally, to graph the combination, push GRAPH. Note that you may need to change the x-axis so that it spans the length of the boxplot and histogram.
Let's repeat the procedure for Jet Set by changing Plot 1 and Plot 2 to use the values from L2 instead.
Comparing Jet Set and National, we see that the median delay for Jet Set is longer than National's. Additionally, National's delays were skewed to the left, while Nationals is more uniformly distributed. We notice two outliers in the data of National's delays. If we disregard those, their overall performance make them more on time than Jet Set.
From Part A, we confirmed that National is skewed to the left and contains outliers, while Jet Set is symmetric with no outliers. Since one of the dataset contains outliers, Arin cannot use the mean and standard deviation. This would not be fair to National who, for the most part, performs better than Jet Set. Therefore, Arin should use the median and IQR.
