Exercise 6 Page 288

Write the number representing the amount of sunflower seeds in the numerator and the amount of pumpkin seeds in the denominator.

43 or 4:3

Practice makes perfect
There are many different ways to compare amounts or quantities. A ratio is a comparison of two quantities by division. For example, the ratio of a to b can be written in two different ways. a/b or a: b We want to find the ratio of sunflower seeds to pumpkin seeds in the recipe. Sunflower Seeds:& 1/3 cup Pumpkin Seeds:& 1/4 cup Now we can write the fraction that represents desired ratio. We will write the number representing the amount of sunflower seeds in the numerator and the amount of pumpkin seeds in the denominator. l Sunflower Seeds→ Pumpkin Seeds→ 1/3/1/4 Finally, we can simplify the fraction. Remember that when we divide by a fraction, we multiply by its reciprocal.
1/3/1/4
1/3* 4/1
1* 4/3* 1
4/3
4:3
The ratio is 43 or 4:3.
