Exercise 32 Page 209

Write the rates comparing the number of miles to the number of hours for both games. To do so, put the number of miles in the numerator, and the number of hours in the denominator.

15miles/2.5hours=mmiles/4hours

Practice makes perfect

In this exercise, we want to use the given table to write a proportion. First, let's take a look a the table.

Today Yesterday
Miles 15 m
Hours 2.5 4
To form a proportion, we need two rates comparing the same things. Here, we can compare the number of miles to the number of hours for both days. We will write the rates as fractions. To compare the number of miles to the number of hours, we will put the number of miles in the numerator and the number of hours in the denominator. Today:& 15miles/2.5hours [1.5ex] Yesterday:& mmiles/4hours Now, we have two rates comparing the same things. We can use them to write a proportion. To do so, we simply need to put an equality sign between the two rates. Such equation will indicate that the number of miles and the number of hours are proportional. Today Yesterday 15miles/2.5hours = mmiles/4hours The proportion from our table is 15miles2.5hours= mmiles4hours.

Different Approach

Note that we could also approach this task differently. We could write rates comparing today to yesterday according to miles and hours. Let's write such rates. Miles:& 15today/myesterday [1.5ex] Hours:& 2.5today/4yesterday We can also form a proportion from these rates. Let's do it! Miles Hours 15today/myesterday = 2.5today/4yesterday If we wanted to solve this proportion, the result would be the same as the result from our first proportion. This was shown three exercises earlier. Also, this way of comparing quantities is a little less natural than the first way. So, in theory, writing such proportion is correct, but it seems more natural to write the first one.
