To understand what a proof is, we first have to think about the difference between deductive and inductive reasoning.

  • Deductive reasoning shows that something is true for the general case.
  • Inductive reasoning shows that something is true for a specific case.

A proof is a mathematical statement that uses deductive reasoning to show that it is true. In the argument, previously established proofs such as theorems or postulates can be used.
