Exercise 24 Page 855

How many people support the building of a new mall? How many of them are females?

0.56

Practice makes perfect
The probability that an event will occur, given that another event has already occurred, is called a conditional probability. Since we want to know the conditional probability of selecting a female given that she supports the building of a new mall, let's highlight the number of females for bulding and the total number of people for bulding in the given two-way frequency table.
For Against Totals
Male 62 48 110
Female 78 32 110
Totals 140 80 220

The condition that the person selected supports the building of a new mall limits the total outcomes to the 140 people. Of those 140 people, 78 are females. P(Female | For building)&=Females for building/People for building [1em] P(Female | For building)&=78/140≈ 0.56
