Exercise 39 Page 490

Remember, only like terms can be combined.

5h^4+h^3

Practice makes perfect
The first step in simplifying this expression is to identify which, if any, terms can be combined. Remember, only like terms — constant terms or terms with the same variable — can be combined. ( 14h^4 + 3h^3)-( 9h^4 + 2h^3) In this case we have two h^4-terms and two h^3-terms. All terms can be combined, so to simplify the expression we will remove parentheses, rearrange it according to the Commutative Property of Addition, and then combine like terms.
(14h^4+3h^3)-(9h^4+2h^3)
14h^4+3h^3-(9h^4+2h^3)
14h^4+3h^3-9h^4-2h^3
14h^4-9h^4+3h^3-2h^3
5h^4+h^3
