Exercise 4 Page 489

Remember, only like terms can be combined.

x^2-3x-7

Practice makes perfect
The first step in simplifying this expression is to identify which, if any, terms can be combined. Remember, only like terms — constant terms or terms with the same variable — can be combined. ( x^2 - 2)-( 3x + 5) In this case, we have one x^2-term, one x-term, and two constants. Only the constant-terms can be combined, so to simplify the expression we will remove the parentheses, rearrange it according to the Commutative Property of Addition, and then combine like terms.
(x^2-2)-(3x+5)
x^2-2-(3x+5)
x^2-2-3x-5
x^2-3x-7
