Exercise 12 Page 73

Try to rewrite all of the values in the same form before graphing or ordering them.

-1 45, - 7/8, - 13/16,7/4

Practice makes perfect

We have have been asked to order the given set from least to greatest number. - 7/8, 7/4, - 1 45, - 13/16 In order to compare the numbers, we will rewrite them in the same form, then graph them on a number line one at a time.

First Value

First we have - 78. To graph this value, let's write the fraction as a decimal. We can use a calculator for that. - 78 = - 0.875

Let's now plot the number on the numberline.

Second Value

Consider the number 74. Notice that is is the only positive number in the set. All the other are negative. Since any positive number is greater than any negative number, we instantly know that 74 is the greatest value in the set.

Third Value

Next, let's plot - 1 45. To do that, we first need to write it as an improper fraction.
- 1 45
-(1+4/5)
-(5/5+4/5)
-(9/5)
-9/5
Let's use a calculator to find the decimal value. - 9/5 = - 1.8 We can now plot the point.

Fourth Value

Once again, we are going to convert the fraction to a decimal using a calculator. - 13/16 = - 0.8125 Let's now plot the number on the numberline.

Combining the Number Lines

Finally, let's combine all of our number lines into one.

Recall that we did not plot 74 since we instantly knew that it is the greatest number in the set. With all the information we gathered we can now write the numbers in order from least to greatest. -1 45, - 7/8, - 13/16, 7/4
