Exercise 12 Page 273

Gather all of the variable terms on one side of the equation and all of the constant terms on the other side.

x=1.5

Practice makes perfect
To solve an equation, we should first gather all of the variable terms on one side of the equation and all of the constant terms on the other side, using the Properties of Equality. In this case, we can start by multiplying both sides of the equation by 3. This will eliminate the fraction and make our calculations simpler.
2/3x+1=5-2x
3(2/3x+1)=3(5-2x)
2x+3=15-6x
Now we can continue to solve using the Properties of Equality.
2x+3=15-6x
2x+3+6x=15-6x+6x
8x+3=15
8x+3-3=15-3
8x=12
8x/8=12/8
x=1.5
The solution to the equation is x=1.5.
