Two angles are adjacent when they have a common side, a common point, and do not overlap. We want this pair of adjacent angles to also appear to be complementary. This means that they should seem to form a right angle. Consider the given diagram.

The only pair of adjacent angles which seem to be complementary are ∠ CXD and ∠ DXE.
