Exercise 28 Page 119

Compare the magnitude of the coefficients of the x^2 term.

f(x), h(x), g(x)

Practice makes perfect
Recall that the coefficient of the quadratic term determines the amount of stretch of a parabola. In fact, if we use y=ax^2, |a| determines the amount of stretch. The larger the value of |a|, the more vertical stretch there is.
Function |a| Ranking
g(x) = - x^2 |-1| = 1 3
h(x) = 5/3x^2 |5/3 | = 5/3 2
f(x) = - 4.5x^2 |- 4.5| = 4.5 1

Recall, 53 ≈ 1.67, which is between 1 and 4.5.
