Exercise 19 Page 868

The volume of a rectangular prism can be found by V=hwd, where h is the height, w is the width, and d is the depth.

4.1 inches

Practice makes perfect

Both Jalissa and Mateo have MP3 players that are congruent rectangular prisms with different colors. We have been told that the Jalissa's player is 2.4 inches wide, 0.5 inches deep, and its volume is 4.92 in^3.

Because the players are congruent, their dimensions are also congruent. Therefore, to find the height of Mateo's player we should find the height of Jalissa's player. Remember that the volume of a rectangular prism can be found by the following formula. V=hwd In the formula h is the height, w is the width, and d is the depth. By substituting the given values into the formula, let's find the height.
V=hwd
4.92=h(2.4)(0.5)
4.92=h(1.2)
4.1=h
h=4.1
The height of Jalissa's player is 4.1 inches, as is the height of Mateo's player.
