Exercise 1 Page 34

A polynomial is the sum of two or more monomials.

Is the expression a polynomial? Yes.
Degree of the polynomial: 2
Special name of the polynomial: Binomial

Recall that a polynomial is the sum of two or more monomials. A monomial is either a number, a variable, or an expression that is the product of one or more variables. Additionally, monomials can only have non-negative integer exponents. Consider the given expression.

3y^2-2 This is a polynomial because each term is a monomial. The degree of a polynomial is defined by the monomial with greatest degree. In this case, the degree is 2. Moreover, we can say that the expression is a binomial because it consists of exactly two terms. Therefore, we have a quadratic binomial.
