Exercise 80 Page 15

To add or subtract fractions, they need to have the same denominator.

19/4

Practice makes perfect

Before we can evaluate a sum or difference involving mixed numbers, the mixed numbers must first be rewritten as fractions.

a bc a* c+b/c Simplify
1 112 1*12+1/12 13/12
3 23 3*3+2/3 11/3
When adding or subtracting fractions, they should have the same denominator. In this exercise, we have two fractions with different denominators. 13/12 + 11/3 Since 12 is a multiple of 3, we can multiply both the numerator and denominator of 113 by 4 to create a common denominator.
13/12+11/3
13/12+11 * 4/3 * 4
13/12+44/12
13+44/12
57/12
