Exercise 29 Page 13

Calculate the numerator and denominator separately. Pay close attention to the order of operations.

3

Practice makes perfect
According to the order of operations, powers are evaluated before multiplication and division, while addition and subtraction are evaluated last. (1+6)9/5^2-4 In this case we have a fraction, which can be considered a grouping symbol. Therefore, we will evaluate the expressions in the numerator and denominator individually before completing the division.

Numerator

In order to evaluate the numerator, we calculate the sum inside the parentheses first and then multiply it by 9.

Operation Before Simplification After Simplification
Calculate power ( 1+6)9 ( 7)9
Multiply (7)9 63

The numerator evaluates to 63.

Denominator

To evaluate the denominator, we should evaluate the power first and then calculate the difference.

Operation Before Simplification After Simplification
Calculate power 5^2-4 25-4
Subtract term 25-4 21

Quotient

Finally, combining these two results, we can calculate the quotient. 63/21 = 3

Alternative Solution

Using a Calculator

We can also evaluate this expression using a calculator. To do so, type it as shown below.
