Exercise 11 Page 236

Practice makes perfect

We want to create a two-way frequency table based on the given information about the local animal shelter. We want to construct our table in the following format.

Type of Animal
Gender Cat Dog Total
Male
Female
Total

Let's begin analyzing the given information. We know that there were total of 74 animals in the shelter. Therefore, we can put 74 into the lower right corner, as it refers to the total number of all types of animals in the shelter.

Type of Animal
Gender Cat Dog Total
Male
Female
Total 74

Now, we will complete the Cat column. We are told that 25 of the cats were male and 14 were female. Therefore, we need to put 25 in the Male row and the Cat column, while 14 needs to be in the Female row in the same column.

Type of Animal
Gender Cat Dog Total
Male 25
Female 14
Total 74

Note that the sum of the values in a single column is the value in Total row. We are able to find the number that should be in the Total row and Cat column. 25 + 14 = 39 Let's put this number into the table!

Type of Animal
Gender Cat Dog Total
Male 25
Female 14
Total 39 74

We have also enough information to complete the Dog column. We know that there were 23 male and 12 female dogs. Therefore, the total number of dogs in the shelter is equal to 23 + 12 = 35.

Type of Animal
Gender Cat Dog Total
Male 25 23
Female 14 12
Total 39 35 74

Once again, we will use the fact that the values in a single row add up to the value in the Total column. Therefore, we can calculate the total number of male animals and female animals in the shelter. Male Total: & 25 + 23 = 48 Female Total: & 14 + 12 = 26 Finally, we can finish constructing the table of the data.

Type of Animal
Gender Cat Dog Total
Male 25 23 48
Female 14 12 26
Total 39 35 74
We want to use the table obtained in Part A to answer the following question.

For which gender, male or female, is there a greater need for pet adoption?

According to the table the total number of male animals in the shelter is equal to 48, and the total number of females is 26. ccc Male Total & & Female Total 48 & > & 26 Therefore, there is a greater need for pet adoptions among male animals.
