Exercise 7 Page 5

To add or subtract fractions, they need to have the same denominator.

134/15

Practice makes perfect

Before we can evaluate a sum or difference involving mixed numbers, the mixed numbers must first be rewritten as fractions.

a bc a* c+b/c Simplify
2 13 2* 3+1/3 7/3
6 35 6* 5+3/5 33/5
When adding or subtracting fractions, they should have the same denominator. In this exercise, we have two fractions with different denominators. 7/3 + 33/5 Since 15 is a multiple of 3 and 5, we can multiply both the numerator and denominator of 73 by 5, and multiply both the numerator and denominator of 335 by 3 to create a common denominator.
7/3 + 33/5
7 * 5/3 * 5 + 33/5
7 * 5/3 * 5 + 33 * 3/5 * 3
35/15+99/15
Now that we have a common denominator, we can proceed to simplifying the expression.
35/15+99/15
35+99/15
134/15
